Tire Care Advice

Proper tire care will ensure that your vehicle is safe on the road and runs at peak efficiency. From understanding tread wear and tear to maximizing tire pressure, we have the right tips to keep your car running. Not only will you save money on vehicle maintenance that could have been avoided, but you will ensure the safety of those you love. As they say, it is always easier to protect than to repair.

Tire Inspections

It is important to get to know your tires. Even the smallest issue can lead to a big problem when you are on the road. Monthly tire inspections should be conducted to look for wear and tear, cracks in the rubber, odd tread marks or the occasional inexplicable anomaly. If you have just purchased new tires, meet with our team to learn what is expected through the life of the tire.

Checking Inflation and Tire Pressure

Checking tires with pressure gauge.

Tire pressure is something that you may have learned a lot about as a kid with a bicycle. You may remember filling your tires every few weeks to maintain speed and prevent blowouts. The same holds true for your car or truck.

Tires lose an average of one pound of tire pressure per month (more if the temperature is dropping). Lower tire pressure can lead to poor handling of the vehicle, decreased gas mileage, uneven tread wear, and tires that are more prone to getting a flat. Once or twice a month, it is important to check the pressure on your tires. If you do not know how to check tire pressure, our team at Marcotte Ford will be happy to teach you.

Tire Tread Wear

Wet weather can be a serious hazard for drivers. Low or uneven tread on the tires can lead to an accident. Many new tires have a tread indicator that lets you know when your tire should be changed. Also, you can keep an eye on tire tread wear monthly to spot any issues.

Your tires may not be something that you spend a lot of time looking at. A smart tip is to take a picture of your tires each month and compare the difference. If there are any issues with your tires, you will have photo documentation of the issue to show our mechanics as well as insurance.
